Jay Morrison, longtime Cincinnati Bengals beat reporter for Sports Illustrated, has announced he will be stepping away from covering the team following the sudden death of his wife, Nicki.
In an emotional post on Monday morning, Morrison shared that Nicki passed away after what he described as “a routine medical procedure” turned catastrophic.
“For the first time in 14 years, I watched a Bengals game with my wife Nicki yesterday. It will be her last,” Morrison wrote on X (formerly Twitter). He explained that Nicki had been on life support after the procedure, waiting for organ donor matches. “We will be saying our final goodbyes today and removing her from the machines. My heart is shattered, and my world is obliterated,” he shared, expressing the overwhelming pain of his loss.
Morrison continued by honoring his late wife’s life, saying the family would celebrate her with a “celebration of life” once they could compose themselves. “She was the most beautiful, caring, bad-a** rocker chick I’ve been proud to share a life with for 37 years,” he wrote, remembering her as a powerful and loving figure in his life.
In his post, Morrison also mentioned that Nicki had requested no funeral, and instead, they would plan a celebration of life when his family was ready.
Bengals head coach Zac Taylor expressed his condolences during a press conference on Monday, saying, “I know Jay Morrison and his family are dealing with something tough right now. Jay, as you all know, is one of the greatest guys in this business. Thoughts and prayers are with him and his family. I hate that he’s got to go through that, but I know we’re all here for him.”
Morrison, who has covered the Bengals for many years, told fans he would be stepping away from Bengals coverage for an indefinite period. His announcement has drawn an outpouring of support from both the sports community and fans, as they rally around him during this incredibly difficult time.
