The teenage son of two well-known California artists was tragically killed after being pinned between two SUVs in his high school parking lot — a devastating incident that has now sparked a wrongful death lawsuit accusing the school of ignoring long-standing safety hazards.

Cosmo Silverman, 15, had just finished his freshman year at Campbell Hall in Los Angeles and was heading out to begin summer vacation when the fatal accident occurred in June, according to a lawsuit filed Tuesday.

The teen was walking through the school’s pickup line traffic when a Rivian SUV struck him, pinning him against a Volvo SUV in front of it. Cosmo was killed at the scene.

His parents, Adam Silverman and Louise Bonnet — both artists — filed a wrongful death lawsuit in Los Angeles County Superior Court, alleging the elite private school failed to follow California safety laws and neglected to protect students from a dangerously designed traffic flow.

Campbell Hall, which charges about $54,100 per year in tuition and counts celebrities such as the Olsen twins and actresses Elle and Dakota Fanning among its alumni, is accused of operating a pickup system that forced students to cross moving vehicle traffic without a designated pedestrian walkway or crosswalk.

According to the complaint, Cosmo and other students regularly had to navigate a line of intermittently stopping and accelerating vehicles to exit campus. California law states that vehicle traffic patterns must not interfere with foot traffic patterns — a rule the parents say the school violated.

“The Silvermans’ son was their pride, their hope, their purpose, and in an instant, Campbell Hall’s negligence shattered the life that embodied everything they cherished,” the complaint states.

The lawsuit further alleges that the school only took action after Cosmo’s death, adding a crosswalk, stop sign, and fencing to the parking lot. The parents argue these basic safety measures should have been in place long before the tragedy.

“Only after Cosmo Silverman’s death did it take belated and elementary steps to remedy hazards that had long been apparent and contrary to best practices for maintaining safe school parking lots in California,” the filing says.

The family also claims the school had been warned repeatedly about the dangers of the pickup area. Text messages included in the lawsuit show at least one unidentified parent telling Adam Silverman that concerns about drop-off and pick-up safety had been raised many times, but ignored.

“Campbell Hall’s community raised their concerns many times, yet the school ignored them and made no safety improvements,” the complaint alleges.

After attempting to resolve the issue outside of court, the Silvermans say they were left with no choice but to pursue legal action. Their attorney, Robert Glassman, said the school’s insurance company refused to take responsibility or meaningfully negotiate.

“This case is about making the school accountable for the significant role its dangerously designed parking lot played in Cosmo’s death and ensuring that no other family has to endure the same preventable tragedy,” Glassman told the Daily Mail.

Cosmo, described by his father as “the most beautiful boy in the world,” grew up in a $2.5 million Los Angeles home surrounded by art and creativity. Adam Silverman works in textiles, while Louise Bonnet is a painter.

In recent months, Cosmo’s father has described life without his “radiant” son as unbearably quiet and crushingly sad.

“No parent should ever have to bury their child,” the complaint reads. “For Adam and Louise, the death of their son was not just the loss of a life, it was the loss of every heartbeat that filled their home with joy… The quiet now is unbearable: an empty chair at dinner, a phone that does not ring, a smile they still expect to see walking through the door.”

  1. I cannot, nor do I wish to try, to comprehend the nightmare devastation of losing my son-my only child. He is my very favorite person on this earth and I treasure his adult friendship. I’m so very sad for this young man’s parents.
