Northern Irish boxing standout Paul McCullagh Jr. has died at just 25 years old following a short illness, sending shockwaves through the international boxing community.

McCullagh Jr., who turned professional in 2020 and won both of his pro bouts, passed away on New Year’s Day. As an amateur, he was a heavyweight champion and widely viewed as a rising force in the sport.

Boxing ran deep in his family. His father, Paul McCullagh, was a champion amateur boxer, while his grandfather — also named Paul — won an amateur title and went on to coach some of Ireland’s most respected fighters, including Barry McGuigan and IBF welterweight champion Anthony Cacace.

Tributes poured in almost immediately from across the boxing world. Olympic bronze medalist Aidan Walsh, who competed at Tokyo 2020, said he would “never forget our memories together.”

The Irish Athletic Boxing Association confirmed McCullagh Jr.’s death in an emotional statement.

“IABA is saddened by the passing of boxer, 25-year-old Paul McCullagh Junior,” the organization said.

The statement detailed his long list of accomplishments, noting that McCullagh Jr. was a member of clubs including St. John Bosco Belfast and his family’s McCullagh’s ABC. He won his first title in 2012, captured an Ulster Elite heavyweight title in 2019, represented Ulster High Performance against New York, and later represented Ireland in a dual nations international against the Netherlands.

Following his success in 2019, McCullagh Jr. transitioned to the professional ranks and remained undefeated.

The association also highlighted the legacy of boxing in his family, noting that both his father and grandfather were champion amateurs, with his grandfather later becoming a highly respected professional and amateur coach. His father currently serves as a professional referee.

“IABA extends deepest condolences to Paul’s family, club and loved ones,” the statement concluded.

A representative from McCullagh Jr.’s boxing club echoed those sentiments in comments to The Irish Times, describing him as both a fierce competitor and a kind soul.

“Paul was a true gentleman in every sense of the word, yet a formidable and powerful presence in the ring,” the representative said. “You could not meet a nicer person than young Paul.”

McCullagh Jr.’s death marks a devastating loss for Irish boxing and a career that many believed was only just beginning.
