An unsettling scene unfolded at a busy Spanish airport after an elderly man was stopped from boarding a flight when staff realized the woman in his wheelchair — his wife — was already dead.

According to local reports, the 80-year-old man was attempting to board a flight at Tenerife South Airport when airport workers noticed that his wife, whom he was pushing in a wheelchair, appeared unresponsive.

The couple had already passed through security when staff decided to check on the woman more closely. That’s when the situation took a disturbing turn.

A worker approached the wheelchair and took the woman’s hand, quickly realizing something was very wrong. She was cold to the touch and showed no signs of breathing. Supervisors were immediately alerted, and the airport’s emergency protocol was activated within minutes.

Security personnel, medical responders, members of Spain’s Civil Guard, and forensic teams rushed to the scene.

According to Spanish newspaper Diario de Avisos, the husband told investigators that his wife had died several hours earlier. Airport employees, however, reportedly claimed the man attempted to suggest her death occurred at the airport — a claim authorities are now investigating.

The man was arrested following the incident but reportedly cooperated fully with officers. Investigators are still working to determine how and when the woman died, and whether any criminal responsibility is involved.

The case remains under active investigation.

The shocking episode comes just weeks after another disturbing incident involving air travel made headlines. In that case, passengers claimed an elderly British woman was wheeled onto an easyJet flight from Málaga to London Gatwick even though she had already died.

Witnesses said the 89-year-old woman was accompanied by relatives who told airline staff she was unwell and had fallen asleep. The aircraft was forced to turn back before takeoff after cabin crew realized she had passed away, delaying the flight by more than 12 hours.

Passengers claimed the woman’s body had been pushed through the airport in a wheelchair and lifted into her seat with help from family members, who allegedly reassured staff that she was “just tired.” One witness even claimed to hear someone say, “It’s OK, we’re doctors.”
