Young Musician Gunned Down in Mall Parking Lot

A night out turned deadly for rising Canadian rapper Lil OT, who was fatally shot in a busy mall parking lot just outside Toronto.

The 24-year-old artist, born Omer Niaz Muhammad, was killed Monday night outside Burlington Centre in what police are calling a targeted attack.

According to the Halton Regional Police Service, officers rushed to the shopping plaza shortly after 10 p.m. following reports of gunfire. The shooting unfolded in the parking lot near a restaurant at the intersection of Fairview Street and Guelph Line — an area that’s typically packed with shoppers and diners.

Muhammad was transported to a nearby hospital, but he later died from his injuries.

At a Tuesday morning press conference, authorities revealed early evidence suggests the shooting was not random. Investigators believe Lil OT was specifically targeted. Police also stressed there is no ongoing threat to the public.

“Unfortunately one young man lost his life,” Constable Jeff Dillon told reporters. “When you are in a wide open parking lot like this, and a gun is fired, it was lucky that nobody else was struck. It shows a rampant disregard for anyone else who may have been here.”

Police say two suspects fled the scene in a white SUV and remain at large. Detectives are now combing through surveillance footage and urging anyone with dashcam video or cellphone recordings to come forward.

The tragedy adds another heartbreaking chapter to Lil OT’s story. In 2023, he survived a drive-by shooting at his family’s home in Hamilton. Despite that close call, the rapper continued building his music career, releasing two albums in the past three years and gaining traction in Canada’s hip-hop scene.

Friends and fans are now mourning a young artist whose life was cut short just as his career appeared to be taking off.

Lil OT’s death marks the first homicide recorded in Halton Region in 2026. Police say the investigation is ongoing as they work to identify and apprehend those responsible.
