What started as a routine surf session along Northern California’s coast quickly turned into a nightmare.

Jason Eastman, 39, was attacked by a shark while surfing near Big River Beach in Mendocino Headlands State Park on Friday evening, leaving him with serious injuries to both legs.

According to reports, Eastman spotted the shark moments before it struck—and made a split-second decision that may have saved his life. He fought back, aiming for the shark’s nose in an attempt to break free, all while thinking about his wife and children.

The situation could have ended much worse if not for the quick actions of three off-duty lifeguards who were nearby. They rushed into the water, pulled Eastman to safety, and helped stabilize him until emergency crews arrived.

He was treated at the scene before being transported to a hospital in Fort Bragg for further care.

Officials later praised the lifeguards, calling their response critical in a situation where seconds mattered.

In the aftermath, state park officials issued warnings and shut down nearby beaches for 48 hours as a precaution. Signs were posted alerting the public to the incident, which is standard protocol following shark encounters.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has launched an investigation and is currently reviewing evidence related to the attack.
