A reality TV icon who once captivated millions has been found dead under troubling circumstances.
Loana Petrucciani, the breakout star who won the very first season of France’s version of Big Brother, Loft Story, has died at the age of 48. She was discovered in her home in Nice on March 25, but reports say she may have passed away several days earlier.
Authorities are now investigating what happened.
Police confirmed that a wound was found on the back of her skull, which may have been caused by a fall. For now, officials say there is no evidence pointing to foul play, but the exact cause of death remains under review.
Petrucciani shot to fame in 2001 when she became a household name overnight after winning Loft Story, a show that changed reality television in France forever. Her rise was meteoric—but her life in the spotlight was often marked by very public highs and lows.
Following news of her death, tributes began pouring in from those who knew her and worked alongside her.
Alexia Laroche-Joubert, CEO of Banijay France, reflected on their long history together, saying she felt “immense emotion” upon hearing the news. She remembered Petrucciani not just for her success, but for her struggles, calling her a deeply sensitive and intelligent woman behind the public persona.
Loft Story host Benjamin Castaldi also shared a powerful message, suggesting Petrucciani’s story was both celebrated and overlooked.
“There are some faces we never forget,” he wrote, describing her as someone who changed television—and perhaps even how people view humanity. He added that while audiences embraced her light, they often ignored her struggles, noting that her authenticity came at a cost.
“She was a real woman,” he said. “With her fragility out in the open. And that’s why we loved her—but maybe also why we failed her.”
