Prince Harry is facing a stunning legal battle — and it’s coming from a place few expected.
The Duke of Sussex has been hit with a lawsuit by Sentebale, the charity he co-founded nearly two decades ago to honor his late mother, Princess Diana.
According to court records filed in London’s High Court, the organization is accusing Harry and his close friend Mark Dyer of defamation, including claims of libel and slander. The lawsuit stems from what the charity describes as a damaging media campaign that allegedly hurt its reputation and operations.
In a sharply worded statement, Sentebale said the situation has spiraled into a serious threat to its work supporting young people living with HIV in Lesotho and Botswana.
The organization claims the alleged campaign caused “operational disruption” and triggered a wave of online harassment targeting its leadership and partners. It also insisted that no charitable funds are being used to finance the legal action, stating that outside funding is covering the costs.
But Harry isn’t backing down.
A spokesperson for the prince and Dyer fired back, calling the allegations “offensive and damaging” and questioning why the charity would pursue legal action against the very people who helped build it.
“It is extraordinary that charitable funds are now being used this way,” the spokesperson said, arguing that resources should instead be focused on the communities the organization was created to serve.
The legal showdown comes after a dramatic fallout behind the scenes.
Harry co-founded Sentebale in 2006 alongside Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, inspired by his time in the country and as a tribute to Princess Diana’s legacy in raising awareness about HIV/AIDS.
But in March 2025, both Harry and Seeiso stepped down from their roles as patrons, citing a breakdown in the relationship between the charity’s leadership and its board of trustees.
At the time, they described the situation as “beyond repair,” pointing to internal disputes that had spilled into public view.
The charity’s chairwoman, Sophie Chandauka, had previously accused members of the board of poor governance and bullying — claims that added fuel to the already tense situation. However, a later review by UK regulators found no evidence of widespread harassment, though it did criticize the organization for allowing internal conflicts to play out publicly.
For years, Sentebale had been one of Harry’s most personal and hands-on causes, with the prince frequently traveling to southern Africa and raising funds through high-profile events like charity polo matches.
Now, the charity that once symbolized his connection to his mother’s legacy is at the center of a bitter legal fight — one that could have lasting consequences for both sides.
