Former Good Morning America anchor Janai Norman is opening up about a deeply personal battle she kept hidden from viewers for years — including checking herself into a psychiatric hospital after experiencing suicidal thoughts.
The shocking revelation comes just weeks after Norman’s sudden exit from the popular morning show left fans stunned.
In a candid new interview, the former weekend co-anchor revealed that her mental health struggles reached a breaking point shortly after she volunteered to cover a hurricane in 2022 — an assignment she now admits she was “not equipped at all to handle.”
After returning from the emotionally overwhelming coverage, Norman said her mental health rapidly spiraled.
The 36-year-old journalist revealed she began having suicidal ideations and made the difficult decision to voluntarily admit herself into a psychiatric facility for treatment.
While receiving care, Norman was diagnosed with borderline personality disorder — something she said forced her to finally confront years of unresolved trauma.
“That really shifted my relationship with so many aspects of my life, but especially with work,” Norman explained.
She said the experience helped her stop tying her self-worth to her career and public success.
“What I did for a paycheck was no longer tied to my sense of purpose,” she said.
Norman also explained that she decided to publicly share her experience in hopes of breaking the stigma surrounding mental illness and psychiatric treatment.
“Checking myself into the hospital, asking for help, getting the help, getting the diagnosis — that’s what pointed me in the direction of the right kind of therapy,” she said.
The former anchor admitted she previously had no idea how many different types of therapy existed and said talking openly about mental health can help others realize they are not alone.
Norman plans to dive even deeper into her struggles in her upcoming memoir, Breaking, which is scheduled for release in January 2027.
The emotional revelation comes during an already turbulent time for the former TV personality.
Last month, Norman confirmed her departure from Good Morning America in a video posted to Instagram. Fans immediately speculated the exit may not have been her choice after she hinted she wished she had “more time.”
Reports later claimed the network chose not to renew her contract after four years as weekend co-anchor.
Since leaving the show, Norman’s life appears to be undergoing major changes. Reports surfaced this week that she and her husband quietly listed their massive six-bedroom New Jersey home for sale for $3.2 million.
Norman shares three children with her husband, though it remains unclear where the family plans to move next.
