At least four people, including the shooter, are dead and others are injured following a shooting at a shopping mall in the suburbs of Indianapolis, according to local reports.

Greenwood Chief James Ison said “a good Samaritan with a handgun” at the scene killed the shooter. He said two others were wounded and are being treated in area hospitals.

The shooter has only been described as an adult male. Police said he had a rifle and several magazines of ammunition.

Officers responded to a call regarding an active shooter at the Greenwood Park Mall in Greenwood, Indiana, just after 6 p.m.

Emergency services arrived on the scene while law enforcement officers worked to secure the scene.

Indianapolis police and other law enforcement agencies were assisting the Greenwood police with clearing out the mall and clearing the scene. Police later said there was no ongoing threat.

As of July 1, Indiana law allows anyone age 18 or older to carry a handgun in public except for those prohibited for reasons such as having a felony conviction, facing a restraining order or having a dangerous mental illness as determined by a court. Indiana’s Republican-dominated Legislature retained provisions in the law that allow private property owners to prohibit firearms.

The attack Sunday was just the latest in a string of mass shootings in the U.S. Schools, churches, grocery stores and a July Fourth parade near Chicago have all become killing grounds in recent months, though the country’s staggering murder rate can often be seen more clearly in individual killings that rarely make major headlines.

Four of the mall shooting victims were female and one was male, Ison said. He didn’t immediately know the sexes or ages of those who were killed. The 12-year-old girl and the other wounded person were in stable condition, he said.

Police confiscated a suspicious backpack that was in a bathroom near the food court, Ison said.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police and multiple other agencies were assisting in the investigation.

“We are sickened by yet another type of incident like this in our country,” Indianapolis Assistant Chief of Police Chris Bailey said.

Mark Myers, the mayor of Greenwood, a suburb of about 60,000 people south of Indianapolis, asked the public to pray for the victims and for first responders.

“This tragedy hits at the core of our community,” Myers said in a statement.

Greenwood Park Mall said in a statement that its grieves for the victims and praised first responders as well as the “heroic actions” of the 22-year-old who police said killed the gunman. The mall was closed Monday.

“Violence has no place in this or any other community,” the mall said.

  1. The Good Samaritan in the tale in the Gospel of Luke did not shoot anybody. It actually helped a dying traveler by the side of the road.

From the perspective of statistics, in a case of active shooters from 2000-2021 there have been 433 cases and of those only 22 were stopped by armed bystanders (that is only about 5%) . 131 were stopped by police and almost twice as many (42) were stopped by bystanders that were NOT armed.
Nevertheless, right wing media keeps mentioning those cases they feel they somehow justify all the guns allowed in the hands of crazies and that cost about 45,000+ lives of Americans every year….NO, It does not. The best medicine is prevention and not a 22 year old with a gun.

    1. Your statistics do not work. 45000+ divided by 433 incidents gives about 104 people shot for each incident. Typical liberal math.

      1. Joe, the 45,000 are the people that died by gun violence overall (murder, suicide, accident, etc. )in 2021, it does not reflect just the active shooter incidents….I have no idea why would anybody read it the way you did….Must be the heat in Texas due to climate change….
Easy to confirm that number using Google.
Not all crazies go shooting at random…some of them shot their wives, kids OR just the neighbor with poor reading comprehension.

    1. And give him a path toward lung or throat cancer? How about a “thank you” and a nice police ribbon?
BTW, what else do we know about this 22 years old and why was he carrying a gun?

      1. Because it is his RIGHT to do so. We keep seeing these public shootings because the so called media glorifies them. That should stop.

  2. Need more HERO’S like the 22-yr-old man willing to step up in the face of death to protect the public and assist police and first responders. The police can’t be everywhere and the hero should be honored by the countless lives saved. He took an immense responsibility doing the right thing that could have landed him in jail in all the crime ridden woke cities. Where are the media liars now? They should be interviewing this hero to spread the word to all the evil cowards that prey on the innocents.

  3. The politicians or the mainstream media will not acknowledge that a responsible gun owner saved lives. It won’t be discussed and it won’t be reported because it’s contrary to the false narrative they perpetuate.
