Former NFL star Doug Martin, a two-time Pro Bowl running back best known for his years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has died following a struggle with police during an arrest in Oakland, California. He was 36.

The Oakland Police Department said officers were investigating a break-in early Saturday when they encountered Martin. According to their statement, a “brief struggle” took place as police attempted to take him into custody. Martin became unresponsive shortly after being arrested. Paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Authorities have not released a cause of death. An autopsy is scheduled through the Alameda County Coroner’s Office.

Martin’s family released a statement asking for privacy as they mourn. Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee also shared her condolences, saying, “We mourn the loss of Doug Martin, an Oaklander who had a distinguished NFL career and tragically passed away Saturday morning. Our condolences are with his family and loved ones.”

Martin, nicknamed “Muscle Hamster” during his playing days, was selected 31st overall in the first round of the 2012 NFL Draft after a standout career at Boise State. He made an immediate impact in the league, rushing for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns as a rookie and earning a Pro Bowl nod.

In 2015, he had another career-defining season with 1,402 rushing yards and six touchdowns, earning first-team All-Pro honors and a second Pro Bowl selection. Over his career, Martin rushed for 5,356 yards and scored 30 touchdowns in six seasons with the Buccaneers and one with the Raiders. He also recorded 148 catches for 1,207 yards and two receiving touchdowns.

The Buccaneers issued a statement remembering their former star: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of Doug Martin. Doug made a lasting impact on our franchise.”

Martin was named one of the top 50 players in Buccaneers history during the team’s 50th anniversary celebration.
