Fans around the world are mourning the loss of Sophie Kinsella, the beloved writer behind Confessions of a Shopaholic and its hugely successful sequels. Kinsella passed away on Monday at the age of 55 after being diagnosed with brain cancer.

Her family shared the heartbreaking news on her Instagram, writing that she died peacefully, surrounded by the things she loved most: her family, music, warmth, Christmas, and joy. “We can’t imagine what life will be like without her radiance and love of life,” the post read.

Kinsella, whose real name was Madeleine Wickham, revealed in April 2024 that she had been living with glioblastoma, an aggressive brain cancer, since late 2022. She explained at the time that she waited to make the news public to give her children privacy and time to adjust.

Her career took off in 2000 with the release of The Secret Dreamworld of a Shopaholic—known as Confessions of a Shopaholic in the U.S.—a witty, charming story about a financial journalist who can’t resist overspending. The book launched a 10-novel series that became a worldwide sensation, selling more than 45 million copies and being translated into dozens of languages.

The first two books inspired the 2009 film adaptation Confessions of a Shopaholic, starring Isla Fisher, which introduced Kinsella’s humor and heart to an even broader audience.
