A nearby hamlet experienced a brief interruption of energy due to an osprey that dropped a fish onto power lines, causing an unusual power outage in New Jersey.

The event happened on August 12th in Sayreville, New Jersey, when a fish fell off the bird’s hand and landed on a transformer. An estimated 2,000 households lost power as a result of this unanticipated incident that caused the transformer’s coils to become misaligned, according to Jersey Central Power & Light, a utility provider.

Although there are times when animals cause power outages, fish are not usually thought of as common culprits in these circumstances.

The electricity company’s spokeswoman acknowledged the accident in a lighthearted way, comparing it to dropping an ice cream cone at a fair.

The electricity company believes the event was caused by an osprey. The fish appeared to have been tried to be carried by the bird, but it escaped from its grasp and fell on the transformer due to its perforated scales and the way it was positioned on the power wires. Large fish-eating raptors, ospreys were once considered endangered in New Jersey, but they are currently recovering. 733 osprey nesting pairs were found around the state according to a survey done last year.

To avoid such incidents, Jersey Central Power & Light regularly inspects its equipment to identify possible osprey nests and relocates them if necessary. The Sayreville Police Department responded to the odd power outage with a hilarious caricature on Facebook that featured an osprey as a suspect.

They also presented “Gilligan,” the fish that started the disturbance, along with a tape that said “police line, do not cross.” The fish was jokingly referred to as a hardworking family guy by the police post, which also warned that the suspect osprey was last spotted flying south and might be dangerous despite its passive attitude.

Although the impacted population experienced a brief inconvenience as a result of the incident, it serves as a reminder of the unanticipated interactions that might occur between urban infrastructure and animals.
