A dramatic and terrifying moment unfolded in Spain after one of the country’s most famous bullfighters was left seriously injured during what was supposed to be a triumphant comeback.
José Antonio Morante de la Puebla, widely considered one of the greatest matadors of his generation, was gored by a bull during a sold-out performance in Seville. The event was meant to mark his highly anticipated return to the bullring after his surprise retirement last year—but it quickly turned into a nightmare.
According to reports, the bull charged at Morante, tossing him to the ground before driving its horn into him as he lay on the sand. The shocking moment stunned the crowd, who had packed the arena to witness his comeback.
Doctors later revealed the severity of the injuries, saying the horn perforated his rectum in what they described as a “very serious” wound. Morante was rushed into surgery, where he underwent more than two hours of emergency treatment.
Despite the horrifying incident, the legendary matador has already shown signs of resilience. From his hospital bed, he shared an update on Instagram, posting a photo with the caption, “One more step master.”
Morante has long been praised for his unique style in the ring, often described as having a rare “mysticism” and unmatched control of the cape. His return had brought a surge of excitement to Seville’s famous bullfighting festival, even drawing in younger crowds and selling out performances.
Still, the sport itself remains deeply controversial. While Spain continues to host around 1,500 bullfights each year, attendance has been declining as criticism grows over concerns about animal cruelty.
